New Codesa owners prioritize deeper draft at the Port of Vitória

After the maintenance dredging work was concluded at the Vitória Bay channel, vessels with a draft of 12.5 meters resumed circulating on those waters. Before that, the maximum draft allowed was 11.2 meters. In fact, the conclusion of the work left the channel in the right conditions for receiving vessels with a draft of 13 meters.
However, the Navy needs to grant its permission before larger vessels are cleared to dock at the Port of Vitória. On August 22, Codesa will pass the baton to Quadra Capital, which won the privatization contract in a bidding process earlier this year. The new owner must then contact the Navy. According to inside information, the new owners of Codesa will prioritize doing so. The Navy typically takes ten to twelve months to analyze similar requests.
“Virtual simulations and other procedures need to be done by the port owners, who are the most interested parties. They need to contact the Navy and provide subsidies. Based on this, they will or will not be authorized to receive larger vessels. Quadra and the transition team are already addressing these details,” explained Júlio Castiglioni, the ex-president of Codesa, now acting as a consultant to Quadra.
According to him, a half a meter increase, which may seem negligible, significantly increase competitiveness at the Port of Vitória. “With a 13 meters draft, the Port of Vitória will be able to receive 94% of the world’s Panamax vessels (a term that designates the ships that have the maximum size to pass through the locks of the Panama Canal) with their full capacity. Currently, the 12.5 draft limits these vessels from entering the port area with 25% less cargo. That is a huge difference with a lot of weight,” concluded Castiglioni.
