New Data Show 14.3% Uptick in Brazilian Container Exports Through September

Data recently released by Datamar’s Business Intelligence Team show that Brazilian container throughput surged 14.3% year-to-date through September compared to the same period in 2023. Focusing on September alone, exports climbed 14.9% year-on-year.
The chart below, which builds on data from DataLiner, compares container exports at Brazilian ports from January to September over the last three years.

China remained Brazil’s top trading partner for containerized exports in the January-September period, with a volume 12.1% higher than the first nine months of 2023, followed by the United States (up 9.1%) and Mexico (up 20.5%).
Meat products accounted for 21.8% of Brazil’s container exports, posting a 10.2% year-over-year increase in the first nine months of 2024. Wood was Brazil’s second-largest containerized export, growing 13.8% in the same period.
Containerized imports also registered substantial gains, with volumes 19% higher year-to-date compared to January through September 2023. For September alone, imports rose 17.9% year-on-year.
The chart below uses data from Datamar’s flagship product, DataLiner, to provide an overview of container imports through Brazilian ports from January to September. The historical data begins in 2021.

China was also the leading source of Brazil’s imports, with volumes sent to Brazil up 29.7% in the first nine months of 2024 versus the same period in 2023, followed by the United States (up 22%) and Germany (up 8.2%).
Plastic was Brazil’s most imported containerized commodity for 2024, with volumes up 28.2% year-on-year from January through September. Reactors, machinery, and boilers ranked second, with a 14.5% increase in the same timeframe.
Argentina
Argentina’s container exports also performed well in the first nine months of 2024, rising 8.7% year-on-year. Comparing September 2024 to September 2023, shipment volumes jumped by 29.6%.
In contrast, Argentine imports declined, with volumes 23.7% lower for January through September 2024 compared to the same months in 2023. Focusing on September alone, imports dropped 8.7% year-over-year.
Uruguay
Uruguay’s container exports grew 12% from January to September 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, according to DataLiner. For September alone, exports increased 23.9% year-on-year.
Uruguayan container imports remained steady year-to-date through September 2024 compared to the previous year, with a slight 1% uptick. For September alone, import volumes were up by 4.1%.
