New Iron Ore Terminal at Itaguaí to be Auctioned Out in August, says Antaq

Eduardo Nery, the General Director of the National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq), confirmed in an interview with CNN that the federal government will auction out ITG02 – an area of 348,937m² in the Port of Itaguaí, also known as the “middle area” – in August this year.
The auction, approved by the Agency in September 2023, is part of a broader plan: the goal is to auction 35 port terminals by the end of President Lula’s term in 2026, with expected investments totaling around R$8 billion.
The ITG02 area in Itaguaí will be dedicated to minerals in bulk, especially iron, with a projected throughput of nearly 400 million tons over the contract period. The investment is approximately R$2.7 billion.
Itaguaí Mayor, Rubem Vieira is against the auction and the use of the area for iron ore operations. He has expressed his stance regarding the federal government’s decision to grant concessions for the new terminal in live broadcasts, stating that the municipality was not consulted about it.
During an event organized by the State Institute of the Environment (Inea), he claimed that Itaguaí is “the most polluted city in the state” due to the iron ore from the port. According to the mayor, the companies are polluters and do not provide fair environmental compensation to the municipality.
