New Maersk-owned terminal in Suape to attract workers from neighboring terminals

The arrival of the world’s largest maritime logistics company to the Port of Suape, located in Cabo de Santo Agostinho on Pernambuco’s southern coast, is eagerly awaited. Maersk acquired an area of the Atlântico Sul shipyard in July last year and is now expected to build a terminal with a capacity to move 400,000 TEUs (container units equivalent to twenty feet), which will modernize and increase the port complex’s operating potential by 55% and create new jobs.
An anonymous source active in the Port of Suape revealed to the Click Petróleo e Gás portal that there is a big chance many workers will migrate from Tecon to Maersk. The Philippine company has been operating in the area since 2001 in the form of a concession.
The construction of the new Maersk terminal at the Port of Suape could begin as early as 2023. Up to R$ 2.6 billion in investment will be made. The company plans to start operations in 2026. More than 3,000 jobs are expected to be created during the construction of the new container terminal. It is expected that 400 people will be employed during the operation. About putting an end to the Tecon monopoly, the Danish company says that “competition can add value to customers and attract new cargo flows, helping the port of Suape to grow faster and generating more business opportunities for the State of Pernambuco.”
Planning has begun…
In 2022, the Port of Suape confirmed several vital projects for the future. Some of these changes favor Maersk’s arrival in the region. In November, the port closed an agreement with the Dutch company Royal Van Oord to finish dredging its main channel and deepen it by 20 meters in its entire length. With the works, the port terminal becomes more attractive to the international market, being able to receive larger ships.
In the same month, Maersk announced that it would expand its land transport operations after purchasing 222 new trailers and 113 “trucks” (EURO 5 Meteor and Constellation), the largest batch of the model ever delivered by Volkswagen.
These new trucks are recommended for road freight transport over medium and long distances. Thus, the company will expand its business which involves food and beverages, electronics, household items, and items for personal use.
Suape: other successful businesses in 2022
Suape also announced the arrival of a mineral terminal owned by Bemisa. The project should cost BRL 1.5 billion, with a movement capacity of 13.5 million tonnes of iron ore per year, and possibly storing 780,000 tonnes of the product in the yard.
The last successful announcement was the confirmation of the implementation of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal. The Government of Pernambuco chose the Brazilian holding company OnCorp for the works on the liquefied natural gas gasification terminal.
