New Pacific route offers alternative for exports leaving Amazon-based Manaus

A new route connecting the Pacific Ocean with the Manaus Free Trade Zone is a promising alternative for exports. The existing route from Asia to Manaus via the Panama Canal takes between 41 and 60 days. In contrast, the proposed Manta-Manaus multimodal axis offers a faster transit time of 31 to 35 days and significantly lower costs. This initiative aims to establish connections between ports and highways, facilitating the transportation of goods from Asia to the Brazilian Amazon.
Under the new route, cargo will be transported by ship or ferry from Asia to Manta, Ecuador, and then proceed to Providencia. From there, ferries will carry the goods to Letícia, Colombia, before reaching Amazonas through the municipality of Tabatinga. These advantages are seen as a means to enhance the competitiveness of the Manaus Free Trade Zone, as explained by Luiz Frederico, the deputy executive superintendent of Suframa.
To assess the feasibility of the proposal, a delegation recently visited Tabatinga. Acting Governor Tadeu de Souza Silva participated in an inspection of the local port and emphasized the project’s importance for the economic development of Amazonas.
However, one obstacle to implementing the project is the lack of infrastructure, such as a customs house, at the port of Tabatinga. This is essential for integrating the municipality into the international trade route. To address this challenge, a working group will be formed in collaboration with the Federal Revenue to find a solution.
The proposal for the Manta-Manaus multimodal axis will be presented at COP 30, scheduled to take place in the capital of Pará in 2025.
