New partnership set to revolutionize ship refueling in Brazil’s Itaqui Port

Acelen and Bunker One have formed a partnership poised to revolutionize ship refueling at Itaqui Port in Maranhão. By introducing in-port refueling, the collaboration aims to reduce costs and vessel turnaround times while expanding service capacity, potentially accommodating up to two ships per day. Additionally, the initiative seeks to attract long-haul and cabotage vessels, further solidifying Brazil’s prominent position as a maritime refueling hub in Latin America.

Acelen, a company under the Mubadala fund, is renowned for its operations at the Mataripe Refinery in Bahia. The Mataripe Refinery will play a crucial role in this new venture, providing the necessary resources for ship refueling at Itaqui Port. On the other hand, Bunker One is a global marine fuel supplier, with its subsidiary, Nova Offshore, overseeing operations at Itaqui Port.

This month marks the commencement of ship refueling for large cargo and tanker vessels in the outer anchorage area of Itaqui Port. This innovative approach allows vessels to be refueled while awaiting entry to the inner harbor for operations, significantly reducing port stay times. This forward-looking strategy not only enhances loading and unloading operations at terminals but also trims costs associated with port fees.

Through this partnership, the companies aim to reach a capacity to serve up to 2 vessels per day, significantly boosting refueling capacity at Itaqui Port.

Bunker One estimates that this collaboration will contribute to 30% growth in its Brazilian operations. This positive impact translates into an even greater supply of bunker fuel services to the shipping industry in the country. In addition to improving vessel refueling in the region, the partnership between Acelen and Bunker One aspires to attract long-haul and cabotage vessels.

This will be achieved through the “Bunker Only Call,” where ships specifically visit a location solely for refueling purposes. This strategy has the potential to further bolster Itaqui Port’s position as a hub for maritime fuel supply.
