New road project to ease cargo flow bottlenecks at the Port of Santos

On Friday (15), government officials made public the development of an executive project for a new road between Greater São Paulo and the region of the Port of Santos. The road will be part of the Anchieta-Imigrantes System (SAI) and will expand the capacity for vehicles traveling the road complex toward the largest port in the country.
According to the Santos Port Authority (APS), the increased cargo throughput at the port complex is expected to push the SAI to its limit by the end of the decade, revealing the need to expand the road network.
The Federal Government has spared no effort to improve the access and infrastructure of Brazilian ports, where internal cargo transport is predominantly done on highways. To achieve this, the SAI project includes the new road connection to the Port of Santos, a new viaduct for the Alemoa region (industrial and port area of the city of Santos), and the construction of the ring road avenue of Cais Santista, which will enhance the port’s service level and increase cargo handling capacity. The project’s development will take 18 months.
In addition to this project, the port region of Santos has plans for a new Santos-Guarujá tunnel, which will be jointly built by the federal and state governments and integrated into the New Growth Acceleration Program (Novo PAC). Approximately R$ 5.9 billion will be invested in completing the largest project in the PAC program.
