APM Terminals Suape has concluded the purchase of the land zone where a port terminal will be implemented in the Suape Industrial Port Complex, located in the Metropolitan Region of Recife. The area, spanning approximately 50 hectares, formerly belonged to the Atlântico Sul Shipyard (EAS).
Construction is expected to commence by February of this year, with the terminal anticipated to become operational in the second quarter of 2026.
This venture will be the first 100% electrified terminal in Latin America, featuring modern infrastructure strategically designed to meet client needs, incorporating pioneering initiatives in port sustainability.
LONG-HAUL ROUTES
In an interview with Estadão/Broadcast, Aristides Russi, President of APM Terminals Suape, expressed interest in reviving Suape’s international calls by increasing the number of long-haul routes at the port by 27%. Currently, the executive explained that cargoes from longer routes undergo transshipment in ports like Santos before proceeding by coastal navigation to Pernambuco.
“Transshipment in another port adds costs and time to the supply chain, making the operation less attractive. By connecting Suape directly to the countries of origin or destination of the cargoes, we can reduce the transport time from Asia, for example, by 25 days, from 65 to 40 days,” stated Russi.
In 2022, APM Terminals won the judicial auction for the acquisition of the area that belonged to the Atlântico Sul Shipyard (EAS). Since then, the company has completed various legal stages to finalize the deal, culminating in the signing of the land purchase. Throughout this period, the company has also been actively involved in developing the construction project.
“Our port, strategically located near seven northeastern capitals within a radius of 800 km, will handle even larger volumes of containerized cargo to be distributed in the region and throughout the country, with a significant cost reduction, making it more competitive. APM Terminals is a globally active group and will attract long-haul routes to Suape, bringing development to Pernambuco, the Northeast, and the country. We are very pleased with the realization of this project,” emphasized Marcio Guiot, the CEO of the port authority.
