Norcoast, a Brazilian coastal shipping company, began operations in Itacoatiara last Saturday (21) in partnership with Super Terminais, a private terminal in the Manaus Industrial Hub. This marks the first cabotage vessel to dock at the floating pier, a solution designed to mitigate the effects of the region’s drought and, most importantly, ensure the continuity of the logistics flow.
Norcoast operates four vessels, each with a capacity of 3,500 TEUs. These ships transport goods such as electronics, motorcycles, plastics, and chemicals from the Northern Region to the rest of Brazil while also ensuring the supply of goods to Manaus. The company’s ships are registered in Brazil and have entirely Brazilian crews.
A sustainable and cost-effective alternative for cargo transport, cabotage has seen a 1.59% increase this year, with a total of 23.19 million tonnes carried from port to port, according to data from the National Waterway Transport Agency (ANTAQ).
“Our exclusive partnership with Super Terminais enables us to operate in a more strategic manner, serving the country’s major ports and metropolitan regions. We aim to promote Brazilian economic development and, most importantly, improve local logistics competitiveness. We provide flexibility and adaptability to the market through efficient, cost-effective solutions,” said Ricardo Nuno, Norcoast’s Director of Operations.
The structure set up by Super Terminais in the Itacoatiara region received an investment of R$45 million to tackle the challenges posed by the drought, ensure cargo transport to Manaus, and maintain the state’s industrial operations.
“This operation reflects our commitment to maintaining the steady supply of raw materials and the outflow of local production, ensuring economic stability and job retention in the region. The partnership with Norcoast secures this stability and boosts the national cabotage market, which has been growing in recent years,” concluded Marcello Di Gregorio, Director of Super Terminais.
