Another edition of the Beer Annual Report was released on Wednesday (05) by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa). The data, referring to 2022, reveal that the brewing sector experienced growth of 11.6%, with the establishment of 180 new breweries. Overall, Brazil now has 1,729 breweries.
Brazil ranks as the world’s third-largest beer producer, trailing only China and the United States. According to data from market research firm Euromonitor International, for the National Union of the Beer Industry – Sindicerv, the country is projected to achieve a sales volume of 16.1 billion liters in 2023, representing a growth of 4.5% compared to 2022.
Márcio Maciel, the executive president of Sindicerv, affirms that these figures demonstrate the potential of the domestic beer market, which has shown growth even amidst a challenging economic environment characterized by high interest rates and rising inflation expectations.
“The beer production chain contributes to over 2 million direct, indirect, and induced jobs, accounting for 2% of the National Gross Domestic Product. For every job created at a brewery, 34 new jobs are generated throughout the production chain, according to a study by the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) conducted for Sindicerv.”
Exports
The report highlights a slight reduction in Brazilian beer exports in 2022 compared to 2021. Last year, 200,588,542 kg of beer were exported, representing a decrease of 16.8%. Although the reduction in export volume also impacted the total value of Brazilian exports, the decline was less significant. In 2022, Brazilian beer exports generated US$ 120,047,504, a reduction of 8.7% compared to the previous year.
Despite the decline in volume, the exported beer saw an appreciation of 9.1%, with the average price per kilogram increasing from $0.55 to $0.60 in 2022. Another positive aspect is the expansion of the Brazilian export market for beer. In 2022, Brazil exported beer to 79 countries, matching the highest figure recorded in the study period, which was observed in 2020.
South America remains the primary economic partner in purchasing Brazilian beer, accounting for 98.4% of sales. Paraguay is the leading destination, followed by Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile.

Imports
Brazilian beer imports continue to decline, likely due to the availability of domestic products. While the imported quantity was 18,406,249 kg in 2021, it decreased to 14,897,234 kg in 2022, representing a decrease of approximately 19.1%.
There is also less diversity in the countries exporting beer to Brazil, with only 21 countries doing so in 2022.
Belgium was the largest import market for Brazilian beer in 2022, accounting for US$ 4,456,620 worth of products, representing 34.3% of the total value of Brazilian beer imports.
