According to a statement by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), headquartered in Paris, China has reported an outbreak of African swine fever (PSA) on a pig farm in the southern Asian country of Hainan.

The outbreak at a 1,063-animal farm began Oct. 23 and was confirmed Oct. 31, the organization said, citing a report from Chinese authorities.

African swine fever is harmless to humans but is often fatal to pigs. After arriving in China in August 2018, the virus wiped out 50% of the country’s herds in one year.
