According to experts in logistics and supply chains, it is unlikely that the omicron variant of the coronavirus will have a long-term impact in the upcoming months, depending on how many people are vaccinated, believes the US Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo.
“I don’t think Omicron will significantly disrupt the supply chain in the long term,” she told CNN in an interview. “It really depends on people doing what they have to do and getting vaccinated,” said Raimondo as she responded to inquiries about the new variant. “There will be some interruption nonetheless.”
“Supply chain issues continue to affect many American industries, not to mention that much of the container shortage is a result of the pandemic,” she told Reuters.
President Joe Biden said as he addressed many US authorities and private sector companies that the actions taken by the United States to eliminate bottlenecks in the supply chain managed to avoid pre-Christmas crises.
Factories close in China
The Zhejiang province, one of the main manufacturing areas in China, has seen the closure of many of its factories due to prevention efforts targeted at the new Omicron variant. Operations were suspended in accordance with the “Covid Zero” policy of the country, which led to increased fear of additional interruptions in the global supply chain.
The companies said they opted to suspend operations in accordance with orders from the local government in Zhenhai District, Ningbo and Shangyu District, Shaoxing. All companies in the affected areas were asked to suspend operations, even though only publicly traded companies are required to disclose any impact on their business.
