ONE orders 12 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships

Japanese shipping company Ocean Network Express (ONE) has placed an order for twelve 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel vessels, aiming to meet its sustainability goals.

With an expected delivery of 2027, six vessels will be constructed at the Jiangnan Shipyard with the other six constructed at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding.

The deal represents ONE’s inaugural fleet of methanol dual-fuelled vessels supporting the company’s Green Strategy.

Jeremy Nixon, CEO of ONE, emphasised how the vessel contracts align with the company’s sustainability targets.

Nixon said: “Our decision to invest in methanol-dual fuel vessels aligns with ONE’s Green Strategy as part of our key initiatives.

“The upcoming new fleet is pivotal in achieving our goal of deploying the first alternative fuel ships by 2030 and marks a significant milestone in our journey towards a greener and more sustainable maritime industry.”

Aligning with the carrier’s sustainability goals, the vessels will be equipped with “state of the art” technologies including an optimized hull form, waste heat recovery systems and a bow windshield.

In addition, the vessels will feature an air lubrication system and shaft generator to enable fuel efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Forming part of ONE’s Green Strategy, it has stated a commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, supporting the industry-set standard.
