Onion: Supply restrictions and import controls mark Brazil’s March 2024
Mar, 27, 2024 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202413
In March, onion stocks depleted in the markets of southern states Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná, as reported by sources from Hortifruti/Cepea. Brazil has relied on stocks from Ituporanga and Lebon Régis (Santa Catarina) to meet the demand, with the remaining supply in these regions nearing depletion. Additionally, Brazil has turned to importing bulbs from neighboring countries, with Argentina being a prominent supplier.
However, it’s important to note that the arrival of Argentine onion bulbs at the Porto Xavier border control has been sluggish due to stringent sanitary inspections aimed at rigorously controlling the entry of potentially contaminated cargo, particularly by quarantine insects. Another factor that has delayed shipments is the so-called slow-down work regime adopted by federal public servants, who work with reduced staff.
Furthermore, it’s worth highlighting that the harvest in Irecê (Bahia) and the São Francisco Valley (Pernambuco/Bahia) has commenced, albeit in limited quantities. The significant rainfall during the planting period has adversely affected the crop volume and the post-harvest quality of the vegetables. The situation is expected to return to normal in Brazil’s Northeast by mid-April, given that the climatic conditions at the beginning of the year, during planting, were more favorable.
