A shipment of 28,800 kilos of onions from the Boquerón department, Paraguay, was exported to Argentina last Friday (Oct 25), joining tomatoes and carrots—staples of family farming—as part of Paraguay’s growing list of fruit and vegetable exports reaching beyond its domestic market.
The milestone was celebrated at the Boreal Dry Port near the Argentine border, attended by Agriculture and Livestock Minister Dr. Carlos Giménez, SENAVE President Pastor Soria Melo, government officials, as well as the Paraguayan producer and the Argentine importer.
This shipment, comprising 1,600 bags of 18 kg each, was produced by Gian Hiebert from Picada 500, Mcal. Estigarribia, in Boquerón department.
Officials praised the accomplishment for Paraguayan agriculture, emphasizing the efforts of the producer, importer, and state institutions working together.
SENAVE President Pastor Soria noted that expanding national production beyond Paraguay’s borders has long been an ambition that is now finally being realized. “This shows the potential of Chaco’s agriculture and the country’s. We’re getting family farm products into international markets and have also started exporting bell peppers. We’re committed to continuing our efforts to enhance production quality,” he said.
Dr. Carlos Giménez, Minister of Agriculture, added that this export eases the pressure on the domestic market and underscored the ongoing work to secure international markets for year-round production and competitiveness.
Producer Gian Hiebert expressed gratitude to supporting institutions and pride in this breakthrough, hoping it will be the first of many. “It’s a proud moment for my family and me. We’re grateful for the technical support that made this possible, and it’s a big step forward for the country,” said Hiebert, who farms 70 hectares in the Paraguayan Chaco.
