Paraná state-based ports handled 62,213,194 tonnes of cargo between January and November 2024, marking a 5.4% increase compared to the same period last year (59,017,027 tons).
“Over the past five years, we have restructured port logistics to enhance efficiency and focus on productivity. Additionally, we deepened the draft of most berths at the Port of Paranaguá to 13.1 meters, increasing the cargo capacity per ship by approximately 2,000 tonnes,” said Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná.
Soybean Meal Exports
Soybean meal ranks among the state’s top exports. Between January and November 2024, 5,885,834 tonnes were exported, a 3% increase from the same period in 2023 (5,701,440 t). The Port of Paranaguá is Brazil’s second-largest soybean meal export hub, accounting for 27.7% of the national output. According to the National Association of Grain Exporters (ANEC), soybean meal exports in 2024 are expected to stay close to last year’s figures, ranging between 22.4 and 22.9 million tonnes nationwide.
Sugar Exports
Bulk sugar exports also showed significant growth, reaching 5,864,612 tonnes in 2024, a 24% increase over 2023 (4,739,114 tonnes). This commodity has seen steady growth throughout the year, with its primary destinations being Algeria, Indonesia, and Iran.
Imports Lead Growth
Imports led the overall growth in cargo handled from January to November 2024, totaling 24,338,899 tonnes—a 21% increase compared to 2023 (20,198,008 tonnes). Fertilizers and containers represented the largest share of this volume.
Fertilizer imports reached 9,977,003 tonnes, 12% higher than in 2023 (8,930,172 tonnes). “We continue to lead the nation in fertilizer imports, representing 24.5% of the national volume,” highlighted Gabriel Vieira, Operations Director at Portos do Paraná.
Containerized cargo showed an impressive 39% growth, increasing from 4,799,340 tonnes in 2023 to 6,684,202 in 2024. The most significant volume falls under the “Other Products” category, which includes containerized goods not individually specified in reports, such as plastics, chemicals, and machinery.
Here is a historical data overview of container throughput at the Port of Paranaguá from January 2021 to October 2024. The data stems from DataLiner. It is worth reiterating that DataLiner data only considers long-haul shipments, not including transshipment, cabotage, docking clearance, or transits.
