Paraguay achieves highest export value in five years

Paraguay exported $8.57 billion in goods in the first half of the year, the highest export value recorded in similar periods over the last five years. Paraguayan products reached 136 countries this year.

According to the Foreign Trade Report drafted by the Paraguayan Central Bank, exports have shown an increasing trend since 2020, achieving their best half-yearly results in 2024. In June, exports totaled $8.57 billion, an increase of 1.8% compared to $8.42 billion in June last year.

Breaking down product category by product category, primary goods exports totaled $2.48 billion in June, up 4.0% from the same period last year. Soy and wheat were the most common products exported in this category. Manufactured products of agricultural origin (MOA) increased by 1.8% from June 2023 to $2.02 billion. Exports of manufactured goods of industrial origin (MOI) totaled $803.5 million, up 7.9% from June 2023.

One of the most significant increases was recorded in pork exports, which reached $14.1 million, up 125.1% from $6.2 million in June of the previous year. Taiwan was the primary destination for pork, accounting for 91.7% of the total value exported.

Export Destinations

Argentina accounted for 39.2% of Paraguayan exports, totaling $2.33 billion, in June 2024, making it the country’s most popular destination for its exported goods. Brazil ranked second with 29.5% of exports, or $1.76 billion, up 25.5% from the previous year. Rice, soybeans, and electricity represented Brazil’s leading exports. Chile took in 7.6% of Paraguay’s exports, totaling 453.5 million dollars, a reduction of 13.2% compared to June 2023. The main products exported to Chile were beef, soy, and rice.

Imports and Origins

Paraguay imports totaled $8.00 billion in June 2024, an increase of 10.1% compared to $7.27 billion in the same period of the previous year. China was the origin of most of Paraguay’s imports, with a share of 33.5%, totaling $2.59 billion, an increase of 9.7% compared to June 2023. The main products imported from China were cell phones, portable data processing machines, and new tires.

Brazil was the second largest supplier of imported products to Paraguay, with a share of 23.7% at $1.83 billion, an increase of 9.4% compared to the previous year. The main products imported from Brazil were mineral fertilizers, malt beer, and tractors. The United States came in third place, with a 7.3% share of imports, totaling $567.3 million, an increase of 1.5% compared to the same period of the previous year. The main products imported from the USA were diesel oil, mineral fertilizers, and automobiles.
