Paraguay witnessed the first batch of 2022 harvest corn being exported in July, when, in that month alone, the country exceeded by 273 thousand tonnes the volume exported in the same period of 2021, according to the Paraguayan Grains and Oilseed Traders Association (Capeco).
In the seventh month of the last harvest season, 101,000 tonnes of corn were shipped, whereas in July this year, 375,000 tonnes were exported, that is, 273,000 tonnes more.
According to Sonia Tomassone, Capeco’s Foreign Trade Advisor, 80% of the new corn crop has already been harvested. According to her, the volumes harvested in the north of the country have been done so with good productivity and high quality, although in the south, fungal attacks reduced yield and quality.
According to the analyst, overall 2022 harvest production in Paraguay is in very good shape; thus, a volume of 5 to 5.5 million tonnes is expected. In terms of domestic grain demand, she estimates it to be between 1.5 and 2 million tonnes. This leads us to anticipate a surplus of 3 to 3.5 million tonnes exported by June 2023.
