Paraguay waterway cargo movements fall 30% in 2019

According to the Centre for Maritime and River Shipowners of Paraguay (CAFyM), the volume of cargo handled through rivers in the country fell by 30% in 2019.
The main factors that caused this are the low volumes of water on the Paraguay and Parana Rivers, which complicate river navigation. As a result, the number of trains carrying iron ore from Mato Grosso and soybeans from Alto Paraná fell between 30% and 40%.
Nevertheless, during the flooding of the rivers, from April to June it was possible to transport soy from Mato Grosso, mainly from Porto Murtinho, although there was a strong resolution in the number of meat export containers (-10%).
