Paraguayan pork is making strides in the Taiwanese market, accounting for 90% of total market exports, according to data from the National Service of Quality and Animal Health (Senacsa). By the end of February, 1,446 tons were shipped abroad, of which Taiwan imported a volume of 1,195 tons, totaling USD 3.5 million.
The observed trade exchange between Paraguay and Taiwan regarding pork protein demonstrates the great dynamism of commercial exchange, which strengthens bilateral relations.
Another receiving destination is Uruguay, with a 7% share. By the end of February, this country purchased 169,978 tons from Paraguay, followed by Georgia and Vietnam.
Growth and development opportunities in the sector
In this context, the Minister of Industry and Commerce (MIC), Javier Giménez, along with his Deputy Ministers of Industry, Lorena Méndez, and Rediex, Rodrigo Maluff, met with representatives of the pork sector to discuss the growth and development opportunities in the industry.
They discussed preparations for the Economic Cooperation Agreement between Paraguay and Taiwan (ECA) and agenda items to be addressed, such as the tariff release for pork exports to Taiwan.
The conversation specifically focused on the export of frozen pork and soft offal, which will be addressed on May 20, in the context of the assumption of the Taiwanese president, Lai Ching-te, where it is intended to take advantage to carry out an interesting commercial mission to the Asian country.
“So, since there are several points of competitiveness, marketing, presence in fairs, reactivating the meat sector table to coordinate all the work together,” commented the Deputy Minister of Industry at the end of the meeting.
Positive prospects
For his part, the head of Upisa, Gilberto Altenhofen, mentioned that the meeting served to organize the agenda with all the projects and decisions that can be made in the pork market in 2024.
“This includes all markets, trades, and the strengthening of quotas. That is, there are a lot of factors competing in the pork sector, and we are very optimistic about increasing the pork quota because there is a market; that is, today, we have a regulated or normal production, but with a lot of power to give more,” he said.
Altenhofen indicated that regarding Upisa, the company exported only 500 tons in January and 950 tons in February. Currently, the company sends its products mostly to Taiwan, as well as to Uruguay, Vietnam, and Brazil. “We have other markets; it depends on the price and how the market closes,” he said.
