Parana-based port Ponta do Félix pull off unprecedented fertilizer re-export operation

Parana-based port Ponta do Félix, located in the city of Antonina, pulled off an unprecedented fertilizer re-export operation. In total, 17 thousand tonnes of crop-aiding products were shipped on September 22 to the United States.
The cargo – which had been stored in a bonded warehouse at the terminal since July 23 – came originally from Egypt. Due to the large volume of fertilizers imported earlier in the year in the wake of fears over possible shortages, as well as recent drops in the prices, mainly phosphorus and potassium, re-exporting was considered the best option by the industry.
The port houses a bonded warehouse, which allows the suspension of taxes collection under fiscal control.
The president of Ponta do Félix, Gilberto Birkhan, explains that the cargo arrived at the Paraná terminal about two months ago, and while it was kept in the storage area, it remained the property of the exporter since no importer attempted to nationalize it.
“In other words, it’s as if the cargo never arrived in Brazil. Bonded areas are neutral zones commonly found in ports to facilitate foreign trade. This increases commercialization flexibility, including this re-export operations, without the imposition of national taxes,” said the president. “Antonina’s advantage is that we have a static capacity of 320 thousand tons and an operational structure for [fertilizer] re-export,” Gilberto adds.
Over the next few days, 24,000 tonnes are scheduled to set sail to Turkey.
This was a first-of-its-kind operation in the port of Ponta do Félix. Moreover, re-exporting reduces costs within the national territory. “The product can stay in the warehouses of Ponta do Félix, in the state of Paraná, or it can be nationalized to another state in the country, thus avoiding double taxation,” concludes Birkhan.
