Paraná may restrict water grants to agriculture
Aug, 15, 2021 Posted by Ruth HollardWeek 202132
Facing one of the worst droughts in Paraná’s history, the government decreed an emergency situation for 90 days.
The decree intends to prioritize public supply, guaranteeing access to water for people and animals while there is a reduction in the volume available for collection. Therefore, it is possible that there are restrictions on the flow granted for a series of activities, including agriculture and livestock.
According to the text, the state’s direct and indirect administrative bodies are authorized to employ human and material resources to aid in operations to supply water to people and animals.
Emergency actions for public supply will be conducted by the IAT (water and land institute). “The IAT (…) will evaluate restrictions on the water flow granted for agricultural, industrial, commercial and leisure activities, aiming to normalize the catchment granted for public supply”, says the decree.
The text also establishes that the SEAB (the state secretariat for agriculture and supply) must implement measures to support producers and ranchers, “to improve the efficiency of water use in agricultural activities”, and to guide rural producers to comply with any water abstraction restrictions.
Compliance with the measures contained in the decree will be monitored by the IAT and the Military Police.
