Paraná ports aim 203% soybean throughput increase in the last quarter

Portos do Paraná anticipated a soybean throughput of 3.647 million tonnes in the last quarter of 2023. If confirmed, this volume will represent a remarkable 203% growth compared to the same period in 2022 (1.2 million tonnes). These numbers align with the growth experienced throughout the year. From January to August 2023, 10.1 million tonnes of soybeans were exported, marking a 10% increase from the same period the previous year (8.1 million tonnes). Currently, soybean shipments account for 25% of the total throughput in Paraná’s ports.
Another segment that stood out in the year-end estimates is soy meal. The state-owned company expects to handle 1.4 million tonnes of this product from October to December, a 72% increase over the same period last year.
According to Luiz Fernando Garcia, the CEO of Portos do Paraná, these figures will be influenced by various factors, including the increased draft, which is the depth at which loaded ships can safely navigate. “This change has conferred more logistical safety and attracted larger vessels to the state’s coast,” he states.
Gabriel Vieira, Director of Operations at Portos do Paraná, notes another aspect: the performance of the two Export Corridors, East and West. “With great efficiency, they have met the necessary throughput to address the growing market demands and are ready for the next quarter,” he adds. In the first half of this year, the East Corridor of the Port of Paranaguá, for instance, recorded its highest cargo throughput in half a century.

Grain Hopper
In addition to the current infrastructure, Portos do Paraná will commence the construction of “Moegão” [grain hopper bypass] this quarter, an exclusive railway grain and meal unloading system promising a 63% increase in cargo unloading capacity. An investment of R$592 million will ensure the smooth handling of grains in the state.
The implementation of “Moegão” will also be crucial for the success of another asset, the “Nova Ferroeste” railway. This project will expand the current Ferroeste railway to increase the state’s train track unloading area, which currently operates between Cascavel and Guarapuava. The railway will connect Maracaju in Mato Grosso do Sul to Paranaguá and will have a total length of 1,567 kilometers, with branches running from Cascavel to Foz do Iguaçu and Chapecó (SC).
