The ports of Paraná have already handled 44.5 million tons in 2021. The volume was mainly driven by highs registered among general cargo products, especially imports, and is 1% higher than the almost 44 million tons registered in the same period last year.
In the last nine months, 10.27 million tons of general cargo were loaded and unloaded through the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina. This year, the volume is 11% greater than the approximately 9.2 million tons handled in the same period last year.
The segment includes bagged products, vehicles, containerized cargo (in TEU), and pulp.
Antonina – The general cargo segment that drove exports from the ports of Paraná was primarily sugar and other bagged goods (or in big bags) – especially at the Port of Antonina.
Between January and September this year, 211,655 tons were shipped – 189% more than the 73,196 tons registered in the 2020 period. Of other products, almost 78,000 tons were exported by Antonina this year, compared to zero registered in 2020.
Paranaguá – Through the Port of Paranaguá, pulp exports increased by 2%. In the nine months of this year, 545,400 tons were shipped compared to 534,794 tons last year.
In imports, almost 4.2 million tons of general cargo products arrived at Paranaguá and Antonina, an increase of 33% compared to the same period in 2020. From January to September of last year, around 3.14 million tons were imported in the general cargo segment.
From January to September this year, 67,101 vehicles were loaded and unloaded in Paranaguá. The quantity is 16% greater than the 57,630 units registered in 2020.
This year, in the nine months, 704,474 TEU were loaded and unloaded at the Paranaguá Container Terminal. In the same period last year, 675,808 TEU were handled.
Other segments
Imports and exports of liquid bulk also increased. The overall increase was 9%. In the last nine months, around 6 million tons were handled through the terminals at the Port of Paranaguá compared to about 5.5 million tons in the same period last year.
Vegetable oils are driving liquid exports, which grew 15%. This year, 872,281 tons were exported compared to 758,971 tons in the same period last year.
Imports were driven by methanol (+33%), vegetable oils (+417%), and petroleum derivatives (+7%).
In general, the movement of solid bulk fell by 3%. From January to September 2020, just over 29.1 million tons were handled by the two ports in Paraná. This year, it was a million less in the period. The drop was motivated by the reduction in the volumes of soy and corn exports. Even so, sugar exports registered a 19% increase – with 2.9 million tons shipped this year, in bulk, against 2.45 million tons registered in 2020.
In imports, fertilizer handling also increased – both by Antonina and by Paranaguá. Overall, the increase was 17%.
In 2021, almost 8.5 million tons were unloaded from January to September compared to 7.2 million in the same period last year.
