Paraná ports grew their handling rates by 2.4% in the year until April

Paranaguá and Antonina, the two Paraná-based ports, handled 18,692,904 tonnes from January to April this year, surpassing by 2.4% the total registered in the same period last year – 18,261,528 tonnes. In terms of volumes, exports exceed imports in all segments. However, landings grew at a higher rate in terms of percentage increase.
In the first four months, 10,972,696 tonnes of products were exported through the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina – 1% more than in 2021, when 10,818,074 tonnes were shipped. As for imported cargo, the accumulated volume in the period was 4% higher than last year: 7,720,208 tonnes this year vis-a-vis 7,443,454 tonnes in 2021.
The goods that either arrive or leave the port can be sorted into three main segments: solid bulk, general cargo, and liquid bulk – the latter handled only by the Port of Paranaguá. In the four-month period, solid bulk accumulated 11,589,498 tonnes considering both imports and exports, 2% more than the 11,326,156 tonnes registered in 2021 in Paranaguá and Antonina.
General cargo handling also grew by 2%. This year, 4,387,898 tonnes have already passed through the ports of Paraná. Last year, this figure only reached 4,294,782 tonnes. In liquid bulk, the increase was slightly higher: 3%. From January to April, 2,715,508 tonnes were loaded and unloaded by Paranaguá. In 2021, 2,640,590 tonnes were handled.
CONTAINERS
In terms of container handling at the Port of Paranaguá, the increase was 3%. In the four months this year, 362,232 TEUs were registered. In 2021, the number was 350,956 TEUs. In TEUs and percentages, exports exceeded imports. In the first four months of this year, 207,396 TEUs were exported – 5% more than last year’s 198,145 TEUs. On the other hand, the cargo volume imported by containers reached 154,836 TEUs, 1% more than in 2021 (with 152,811 TEUs).

ANTONINA
Despite not operating with liquids or containers, cargo handling through the Port of Antonina increased by 80%. That’s the difference between this year’s 493,455 tonnes and last year’s 274,423. Imports of fertilizers (433,358 tonnes – 259% more than the 120,852 tonnes in 2021) and general cargo exports (sugar in sacks – 16,575 tonnes) increased. There were no sugar exports in sacks in 2021.
APRIL
In April alone, the flow of goods in the Paraná-based ports fell by 14% as 4,613,609 tonnes were handled compared to 5,391,766 tonnes in 2021. Products like corn, sugar, vegetable oils, and cellulose stood out, with exports increasing in the month despite the low level. The volume of malt/barley and oil derivatives imported increased as well.
