The ports of Paraná scored two new handling records this year so far. Both the volumes registered in the two first months of the year and February alone exceed expectations, rising 27% and 39%, respectively, compared to 2021.
“With more than 5 million tonnes handled in February alone and over 9 million tonnes in the two months, we reached the best handling results for both periods in the ports of Paranguá and Antonina,” said the CEO of Portos do Paraná Luiz Fernando Garcia.
In February, 5,076,757 tonnes of cargo passed through the ports’ terminals. In the two-month period, the movement of cargo reached 9,234,295 tonnes.
“As opposed to what we observed at the end of last year, the handling of solid bulk drove the increased flow of imports and exports,” comments Garcia.
Solid bulk accounts for almost 64% of the movement seen in the first two months, with 5,893,104 tonnes. As for February, the transportation of solid bulk corresponded to 3,469,252 tonnes, that is, 68.34% of the volume handled.
Exports – In general terms, considering the three main segments (General Cargo, Liquid Bulk, and Solid Bulk) – 5,040,887 tonnes of cargo were exported through the ports of Paraná in the first two months of 2022. The volume is 46% greater than the 3,459,699 tonnes in the same period last year.
In terms of monthly handling, the volume exported totaled 2,832,256 tonnes, 66% higher than in February 2021, with 1,702,124 tonnes.
Imports – Increases were also seen among imported products. In the two-month period, 4,193,408 tonnes arrived at the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina, a 46% growth compared to the 3,787,513 tonnes in 2021.
As for February imports, the volume recorded was 2,244,501 tonnes, an increase of 15.3% over last year (1,946,414 tonnes).
Containers – exports outnumber imports in terms of containerized cargo. This year, 96,544 TEUs were exported, a 7% increase over the 90,243 units handled the previous year. Imports totaled 76,449 TEUs, a 6% increase over the 72,415 recorded in the first two months of 2021.
In February alone, 84,920 TEUs were handled, 8.6 percent more than the 78,150 TEUs handled in the same month in 2021.
Antonina – The handling of the terminal at the Port of Antonina has increased by 157%. There were 313,018 tonnes of cargo in the first quarter of this year, compared to 121,995 tonnes the previous year.
The monthly movement increased from 64,310 tonnes in February 2021 to 149,375 tonnes in the last month of 2022, an increase of 132.2%.
