Paraná ports record 16.8 million tonnes exported between January and May

Exports at Paraná state ports have grown by 4% this year compared to the same period last year, totaling some 16,861,765 tonnes—715,435 tonnes more than in 2023. Soybeans led the increase in volume, with 6,381,268 tonnes handled this year compared to 5,743,035 tonnes last year, representing an 11% growth.

According to federal government data from Comex/Stat and Power BI, the ports of Paraná accounted for half of the national growth in soybean exports between January and May this year. Of the 1,183,261 additional tonnes exported by Brazil this year, 638,232 tonnes stem from the Port of Paranaguá.

“In other words, more than half of the national soy movement passed through the ports of Paraná. It is a very significant volume and shows the efficiency of our operations,” said Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná.

The chart below shows a historical overview of soybean exports measured in tonnes between January 2021 and May 2024, according to data from Datamar’s pioneer maritime intelligence service DataLiner.

In addition to soybeans, sugar exports also saw a notable increase. Between January and May, sugar exports in bulk rose from 1,086,008 tons last year to 2,212,473 tons this year, a 104% increase. Sugar exports in bags grew from 143,913 tons in 2023 to 293,510 tons in 2024, also a 104% rise.

“We had a significant increase in exports of sugar due to high demand from India, which experienced a crop failure and is struggling to meet domestic demand. We have a large hinterland available in the Port of Paranaguá region, as well as the infrastructure necessary to handle this type of cargo,” explained Gabriel Vieira, Operations Director.

“The volume of sugar operations grew 61% compared to last year, and the average ton price increased from US$464 to US$520. Sugar is one of the few products on the agribusiness export agenda in 2024 to see an increase in both volume shipped and foreign exchange revenue,” noted Giovani Ferreira, administrative advisor of Portos do Paraná.

Container shipments also increased, from 232,566 TEUs last year to 325,382 TEUs this year, with a particular emphasis on frozen meat.

Overall picture

Overall, general movement, including both imports and exports, grew by 8% compared to last year, from 25,220,449 tons to 27,197,565 tons. Imports saw a 14% growth, rising from 9,074,119 tons to 10,335,801 tons this year.
