Paraná-based ports reached a remarkable milestone in May 2023, as the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina achieved a record throughput of 6,125,887 tonnes of cargo. This exceptional performance can be attributed to both import products and, notably, exports.
The previous record, set in May 2021, stood at 6,081,354 tonnes. However, the new achievement surpassed this mark by 0.73%. Furthermore, compared to the same 31-day period in 2022, which saw a throughput of 5,268,293 tonnes, the overall volume handled this year experienced a substantial 16% increase.
A notable 29% export growth primarily drove impressive results compared to 2022. This year’s May exports reached a significant figure of 4,176,175 tonnes, surpassing the 3,242,924 tonnes recorded in May 2022.
Luiz Fernando Garcia, the director-president of Portos do Paraná, emphasized that the outstanding performance was primarily due to the movement of bulk cargo, including soy, soymeal, and sugar, as well as general cargo.
According to Garcia, this achievement reflects the operational efforts focused on optimizing processes and enhancing productivity during the boarding of ships.
On the other hand, imports experienced a slight decline of 4% when comparing the 1,949,712 tonnes handled in the previous month to the 2,025,369 tonnes seen during the same 31-day period last year.
Year-to-Date Figures
Looking at the cumulative data for the first five months of the year, the ports of Paraná handled a total of 25,220,449 tonnes, indicating a 5% increase compared to the 23,961,677 tonnes registered from January to May 2022. The export segment demonstrated significant growth in the five-month period, with 16,146,244 tonnes in 2023, up 14% from the 14,215,619 tonnes handled during the same period in 2022.
In contrast, imports experienced a cumulative decrease of 7%. From January to May this year, a total of 9,074,204 tonnes of cargo were nationalized compared to 9,746,057 tonnes in 2022.
“In addition to soy and other solid bulk products, which yielded large volumes in exports, the container and liquid segments also contributed to the increase registered in 2023,” concluded the CEO of Portos do Paraná.
