The ports of Paraná had a busy first half (H1), with a 30.9 million tonnes cargo throughput, a 6% increase from the same period in 2022 (29 million tonnes). In June alone, 5.7 million tonnes of cargo passed through the Paranaguá and Antonina terminals. This was a 12% increase from June last year, which saw 3.2 million tonnes.
The ports’ performance in the first half of the year helped Paraná break the record for exports and set a positive outlook for the second semester, according to the directors of the public company Portos do Paraná. June was the fourth month in a row with an increase in volumes.
The director-president of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia, says that the rise in exports drove the growth in the first six months of the year. “We ended the first semester with increased exports in all segments. However, the most significant increases occurred among solid bulk, mainly soy and sugar”, he comments.
Solid bulk accounts for almost 63.4% of the total movement. From January to June this year, 19.6 million tonnes were moved in this segment, 7% more than the 18.3 million tonnes last year.
In June, 3,748,971 tonnes of solid bulk were shipped and unloaded. This was 14.7% higher than the 3.3 million tonnes in 2022. “Although we still have a drop in imports in this segment, export volumes are higher and boost the data,” says the CEO.

PRODUCTS – Soy exports reached 1,578,472 million tonnes in June, 60% more than the 985 thousand tonnes in the same month last year. In the first half, 7,321,508 tonnes of soy were loaded through the port of Paranaguá, 24% more than the 5.9 million tonnes in 2022.
Sugar exports totaled 582 thousand tonnes in June, 55% more than the 375 thousand tonnes in the same month last year, and 1.7 million tonnes in the first half, 39% more than the 1.2 million tonnes in 2022.
Soybean meal exports reached 685 thousand tonnes in June (25% more than the 548 thousand tonnes in 2022) and 3.3 million tonnes in the first half (12% more than the 2.9 million tonnes in 2022).
In addition, a small amount of wheat was exported this year: 45.6 thousand tonnes, 39% more than the 32.9 thousand tonnes in the first half of 2022.
GENERAL – Exports were strong this year, reaching 3,994,905 tons in June and 20.1 million tonnes in the first half. These were 26% and 16% higher than the same periods in 2022, respectively (3.2 million tonnes and 17.4 million tonnes).
Other segments also saw significant increases. “Among general cargo products, for example, container and vehicle cargo movement stood out,” says the director of operations at Portos do Paraná, Gabriel Vieira.
Among liquids, Vieira says that the increases were in soy oil and petroleum derivatives exports and methanol, vegetable oils, and petroleum derivatives imports.
“We are starting the second semester with high expectations. There was a 6% increase in the first half movement, which is remarkable and gives us more confidence that we can end the year with more than 60 million tonnes”, he concludes.
