Paraná producers must import corn after drought
Aug, 16, 2021 Posted by Ruth HollardWeek 202133
The drop in corn production in Paraná is increasing costs for animal breeders who depend on corn for feed.
The drought, pests, and frosts that occurred in late June and July impacted the production of off-season corn. In this state alone, the decrease was almost 60% compared to what was initially planned.
To meet the corn demand in Paraná, farmers will have to bring in at least 4 million tons of corn from abroad. Most of it must come from Paraguay and Argentina.
Coopavel Cooperativa Agroindustrial, one of the largest co-ops in Paraná, says that this will raise the price of feed even more – the imported corn costs R$ 105, while the corn from Paraná costs R$ 95, on average.
