On Monday, September 12, the public company Portos do Paraná issued a positive assessment regarding export and import operations. August 2022 was the stage for a 20% climb in the general movement of cargo at the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina, accounting for about 5.3 million tonnes. Last year, the cargo throughput was 4.4 million tonnes.
“Exports stand out in terms of both volume and percentage rise. In the month of August, 3.4 million tonnes passed through the ports of Paraná, a 42% increase over the previous year’s 2.4 million tonnes. However, imports totaled 1.87 million tonnes, which is 6% less than the nearly 2 million tonnes imported in August 2021,” according to Portos do Paraná.]

In the first eight months of 2022, the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina saw a throughput of almost 39.86 million tonnes. “Considering the last ten years, this was the largest cargo movement ever recorded in this eight-month period. Moreover, compared to the volume handled from January to August 2021, nearly 39.25 million tonnes, there was a 2% growth,” comments the company.
From January to August 2022, exports from the ports of Paraná amounted to 24.45 million tonnes, 4% higher than the same period in 2021 (23.41 million tonnes). “Imports – in a total of 15.4 million tonnes – registered a drop of 3%, compared to the 15.85 million tonnes landed last year,” explains the public company.

“Year-to-date, the exports of corn, bran, wheat, soybean oil, and pulp stand out. The volume of imports dropped for almost all products. Fertilizer, the largest bulk import, increased little (by less than 1%). However, the tendency is also downward when previous months’ volumes are examined. The container throughput in the same period went 5% up. From January to August, 774,342 TEUs passed through the ports. In 2021, the figure was 738,634 TEUs,” comments the Portos do Paraná company.
According to the company, exports were definitely the highlight: “451,358 TEUs were exported, up 9% from 2021: 415,499 TEUs.”
