Paraná state ports record 4% upswing in Jan-Jul cargo throughput

Cargo throughput at the ports of Paraná state (Paranaguá and Antonina) reached the 36,060,696 tonnes mark from January to July 2023. Consequently, the state-owned company Portos do Paraná reported a 4% upswing in port operations compared to the same period last year, when 34,576,652 tonnes were recorded.

The performance boost is primarily attributed to the performance of the East Export Corridor at the Port of Paranaguá, which saw 12,975,534 tonnes of bulk cargo pass through its berths between January and July. This seven-month year-to-date volume constitutes an all-time high for the port complex and sets a new historical record. The prior benchmark was established in 2020, with 12,924,748 tonnes shipped during the initial seven months of that year.

The solid bulk category leads the log of key commodities, which was responsible for moving 16% more cargo year-to-date. During the first seven months of 2023, the sector transported 17,192,572 tonnes, compared to 14,734,867 tonnes during the corresponding period in the previous year.

Soybeans alone accounted for 8,478,722 tonnes (+15%). Additionally, soybean meal added a total of 3,787,035 tonnes (+9%), while corn added 2,585,082 tonnes (+21%), and bulk sugar amounted to 2,238,920 tonnes (+28%).

“These figures underscore a significant upsurge in exports across all product categories within the Port of Paranaguá from January to July. This surge has enabled us to outperform past historical milestones,” commented Gabriel Vieira, the Director of Port Operations at Portos do Paraná.

The ports of Paraná recorded 1,468 berths from January to July, marking a 5% increase compared to the 1,400 maneuvers executed during the same period the prior year. Truck movements within the Screening Yard stood at 291,442 during this period, a 14% increase compared to the 255,909 vehicles that underwent grain screening in the first seven months of 2022.

LIQUID BULK

Another sector that displayed a noteworthy performance was the liquid bulk cargo. With a tally of 5,534,343 tonnes, this sector posted a 21% growth compared to the 4,576,695 tonnes recorded in 2022.

In terms of exports, 1,766,582 tonnes were shipped (+32%), with a particular focus on petroleum derivatives, which experienced a remarkable 117% surge (653,610 tonnes), and vegetable oils, rising by 7% (989,171 tonnes). Regarding imports, handling reached 3,767,761 tonnes (+16%). The chief products unloaded were methanol, rising by 34% (780,087 tonnes), and vegetable oils, growing by 44% (168,815 tonnes). Oil derivatives increased by 15% (2,628,695 tonnes).

VEHICLES

From January to July, vehicle movement at the Port of Paranaguá escalated by 21%. In total, 51,034 units rolled in and out of vessels during this period, compared to 42,130 units within the first seven months of 2022. Exports constituted 34,855 vehicles (+12%), while imports accounted for 11,033 vehicles (+47%).
