The ports of the state of Parana closed in November with a total throughput of 54,014,368 tonnes across the year, owing to increase movement in all cargo segments. This volume is 2% higher than the previous year’s 11-month total, 53,028,869 tonnes.
The number reached despite the frequent rains seen last month boosts the sector’s hopes. “We expect to exceed last year’s record, which was 57.5 million tonnes. Paranaguá has above-average productivity, thanks to the constant efforts of our workers, operators, port terminals, and state and private investments,” explains the CEO of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia.
According to him, the goal is to improve the structure provided constantly. “There are significant investments underway to improve further the efficiency of the terminals in Paraná, which is already recognized nationally and internationally,” he adds.
Solid bulk operations correspond to more than half Parana’s port operations (61.6%). From Jan to November this year, 33,308,239 tonnes of solid bulk products were transported versus 33,186,345 in the same period of 2021 (0.36%). In general cargo products, the increase was 1%, comparing the 12,777,691 tonnes moved this year to the 12,593,871 tonnes registered last year.
The growth was even greater in liquids: 9%. Until November 30th, the total volume of loaded and unloaded cargo liquid bulk products was 7,928,439 tonnes. There were 7,248,654 tonnes in 2021.
Exports increased by 8%, with 33,302,202 tonnes loaded, up from 30,782,899 tonnes in 2021. However, there was a decrease in the opposite direction. Imports fell 7% in the last 11 months, from 22,245,970 tonnes to 20,712,166 tonnes.
The highlights among exports were corn, meal, sugar, cellulose, and vegetable oil shipped through the ports of Paraná.
This year’s increase in corn shipments reached 533%, with 4,522,065 tonnes loaded through the ports of Paraná. In 2021, from January to November, 714,464 tonnes of the product were exported.
As for soy meal, shipments totaled 5,218,316 tonnes this year, 15% more than the 4,543,885 tonnes seen in 2021. The sugar trade increased by 1%. Summing the product shipped in bulk and bags, there were 4,560,553 tonnes in 2022 and 4,522,180 tonnes in 2021.
Soybean oil exports rose 38% in the same period – from 1,064,801 tonnes to 1,470,461 tonnes. Finally, 678,230 tonnes of pulp were shipped last year compared to 749,558 tonnes this year, an increase of 11%.
Containers
The increase in container throughput was 6% overall, 7% for exports (from 573,206 TEUs to 610,973 TEUs), and 5% for imports (from 436,440 TEUs to 459,110 TEUs). The segment’s movement totaled 1,070,083 TEUs (specific unit equivalent to a 20-foot container). Parana saw 1,009,646 TEUs in the same period in 2021.
