Chile will start importing pork from the Brazilian state of Paraná after officially recognizing the state as a foot-and-mouth disease-free zone without vaccination. The announcement is expected to be formalized this Wednesday (23) during the visit of Chilean President Gabriel Boric and his delegation to Brazil.
Chile’s Minister of Agriculture, Esteban Valenzuela, shared the news in advance on social media. “We recognize that Paraná is free of foot-and-mouth disease, and therefore, we will be able to receive meat from this very important state in southern Brazil,” he said.
The minister also emphasized that this move is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen trade relations between the two countries, especially in agribusiness.
Paraná’s State Secretary for Agriculture and Supply, Marcio Nunes, highlighted the significance of the decision. “This is a great moment for Paraná, one of Brazil’s largest pork producers. This decision is expected to generate more income for our farmers and more jobs and bring greater recognition and value to the quality and health standards of our products. It also adds value and opens doors for new trade relations,” he said.
Paraná is Brazil’s second-largest pork-producing state, with 12.4 million pigs slaughtered in 2024—representing 21.5% of the country’s total slaughter.
Also, in 2024, Paraná led the country in production growth. According to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the state produced 281.4 thousand more pigs in 2024 than in 2023.
Luis Rua, Secretary of Trade and International Relations at Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, described the decision as “very important,” noting that it fulfills a long-standing demand from Paraná’s meat processing plants. “This has been a long-standing request from the state, and soon, companies from Paraná should be exporting pork to Chile,” he said.
