Cargo operators that make up the East Export Corridor of the Port of Paranagua (Corex) handled a record 12,975,534 million tonnes of grain from January to July 2023, the highest volume ever recorded in seven months. The previous record was set in 2020, when 12,924,748 million tonnes were shipped.
Corex terminals shipped 7,683,434 million tons of soybeans, 2,994,725 million tonnes of soymeal, 2,266,736 tonnes of corn, and 30,640 tonnes of wheat in the first seven months of 2023. In the same period of 2022, shipments totaled 6,576,387 tons of soybeans, 2,900,373 tonnes of meal, 1,859,824 tonnes of corn, and 32,895 tonnes of wheat.
Portos do Paraná Director of Operations Gabriel Vieira said the strong grain movement this year led to Corex’s record-breaking performance. “The intense movement of grains this year led the Export Corridor of Paranaguá to record the highest accumulated volume in seven months in history,” he said.
July Figures
In July this year alone, 1,875,128 tonnes were handled at the Paranagua Port export corridor. Corn was the highlight for the period, with 352,297 tons. The commodity began being shipped again at Corex after a three-month break. Year-on-year, the increase was 42.7% from the 246,747 tonnes recorded in July 2022. In the same month, 1,522,831 tonnes of soybeans and bran were shipped.
The daily average of grain shipments through Corex reached 62,504 tonnes in July, up from 59,058 tonnes in the same month last year. The increase was even greater regarding productive days in the port operation. When it rains, the movement of solid bulk is halted.
In July 2022, there were 4.3 days of rain; in the same period this year, this number grew to 8.4 days. Considering only the productive days (21.6 days), the average production of the berths reached 86,805 tonnes per day in July 2023.
“This is what we call net productivity, that is, not counting the days with interrupted operations caused by the rain,” says Gabriel Vieira, director of operations at Portos do Paraná.
Corex
Shipments from Corex are carried out by three berths: 212, 213, and 214. There were 30 ships loaded in July, compared to 33 ships in July 2022. The berth that produced the most shipments was 213: 12 ships and 788,000 tons of cargo.
In the complex, public silos (vertical and horizontal) operated by members of the Export Corridor Port Operators Association (AOCEP) are interconnected by conveyor belts. AOCEP members include AGTL; Cargill; Cimbesul; Centro Sul; I cook; Coamo II; Cotriguaçu; Interalli; Louis Dreyfus; and Rock.
