Brazilian state Paraná saw its natural honey exports grow by 113% in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2023. Approximately 2,191 tonnes were exported in 2024, up from 1,026 tonnes from January to June last year. This volume increase was also accompanied by a rise in revenue, reaching $5.5 million in the first six months of this year—77% higher than the $3.1 million generated in 2023.
The data was compiled by Ipardes (Paraná Institute of Economic and Social Development), using information from Secex (Foreign Trade Secretariat) of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services.
Paraná ranked as the fourth-largest honey exporter in Brazil during the January-to-June period. Piauí topped the list with $14.4 million and 5,920 tonnes, followed by Minas Gerais with $7.7 million and 2,918 tonnes. Santa Catarina came in third, selling $6.3 million and 2,522 tonnes.
According to Ipardes’ report, the United States is the primary market for Paraná’s honey, accounting for 75% of its exports. There was an increase in volume this year, with 1,646 tonnes generating $4.1 million in revenue, compared to 569 tonnes and $1.7 million in the same period last year.
In addition to the United States, 22 other countries purchased honey from Paraná in the first half of this year. Notable buyers included Canada ($739,000 and 302 tonnes), Germany ($300,000 and 119 tonnes), and Australia ($288,000 and 121 tonnes). Since the start of the historical data series in 1997, Paraná’s honey has reached 54 countries.
Another significant point is this market’s reach. Honey produced in Paraná reaches countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, demonstrating the strength of Paraná’s beekeeping in international trade. Among the 23 countries that purchased honey in the first half of this year were Singapore in Asia, which imported 12 kilograms, and Turkey, straddling Europe and Asia, which received just 2 kilograms from the state.
BRAZIL
According to Agrostat Brasil, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock’s database, in the first half of 2024, Brazilian companies exported 17,683 tonnes of raw honey, an 18.65% increase over the 14,903 tonnes exported in the same period in 2023. The revenue in dollars was $45 million, 9.5% lower than in the first six months of 2023 ($49.2 million).
As in Paraná, the main destination for Brazilian honey exports in the first half of 2024 was the United States, which received 80.2% of the total volume sold, amounting to 14,181 tonnes and generating $35.7 million in revenue.
