According to the Weekly Agricultural Outlook Bulletin released by the Department of Rural Economy (Deral) on Thursday (23), pear production in Brazil reached 15.7 thousand tons in 2023, ranking 22nd in volume among the fruits cultivated and 21st in Gross Value of Production (VBP), with R$ 55.8 million, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). National pear cultivation covers 1,019 hectares, a minimal fraction compared to the country’s 3.1 million hectares dedicated to fruit farming.
Rio Grande do Sul leads national production, accounting for 47.5% of the total, followed by Santa Catarina (31.3%) and Paraná (10.1%). Caxias do Sul (RS) stands out as the largest individual producer, responsible for 26% of the volume harvested in Brazil.
Paraná, the third-largest producer in the country, produced 1.6 thousand tons in 2023, spread across 110 hectares. Over the last 10 years, the cultivated area and harvest have significantly decreased by 36.4% and 32.3%, respectively. The metropolitan region of Curitiba accounts for 60.3% of the state’s production, with Araucária standing out, responsible for almost half of the total (49.6%).
With the start of the harvest, the prices of common domestic pears have reached R$ 90.00 per 20 kg box at the Ceasas in Curitiba. For the Yari variety, prices rise to R$ 140.00, driven by offerings from orchards in Santa Catarina and Paraná. Imported pears from Argentina and the United States are sold between R$ 130.00 and R$ 170.00 per 18 kg box.
In 2024, pears accounted for 22.6% of the volume and 14.4% of the costs of Brazil’s fruit imports, making them the second most imported fruit. A total of 169.2 thousand tons were imported at a cost of US$164.3 million, primarily from Argentina (73.5%) and Portugal (17.7%), according to data from Agrostat/Mapa.
