To foster greater collaboration and international knowledge exchange further to develop its port terminal, the Pecém Complex signed a memorandum of understanding with the Port of Xiamen, located in the Fujian province of China, on Monday, the 16th. The document was signed by the President of the Pecém Complex, Hugo Figueirêdo, the Vice President of Finance, Rebeca Oliveira, and Huang Xunyou, the Director of the Fujian Provincial Port Group, during an event at Pecém. The Vice Governor of the Fujian province, Lin Wenbin, was also part of the delegation.
Accompanied by a delegation from the Fujian province, the Chinese authorities were given a detailed tour of the Pecém Complex’s infrastructure, including the industrial area, the Pecém Port, and the Ceará Free Trade Zone (ZPE Ceará). The executives were also introduced to the major projects at Pecém, including the Green Hydrogen Hub, which already has 33 Memorandums of Understanding for producing and distributing green hydrogen and ammonia.
The cooperation activities outlined in the agreement between Pecém and Xiamen include sharing ideas and best practices for port improvements and productivity, developing port information technology, participating in the Maritime Silk Road alliance, facilitating trade and investment cooperation, and other port-related activities to be jointly decided by both parties. For the President of the Pecém Complex, this cooperation agreement can expand the relationship between the two ports, which are already connected by a long-distance route.
“At present, there is already cargo movement between the ports of Pecém and Xiamen, primarily related to ornamental stones. However, there is also potential for container cargo to be transported between the two ports, which currently arrive and depart from Brazil via the Port of Santos. I believe that with cooperative efforts, there will be opportunities to explore new cargo types and routes,” notes Hugo Figueirêdo.
The President of the Pecém Complex also highlights the potential for exporting grain cargos transported by Transnordestina to Fujian ports starting in 2027. “We’ve come to strengthen ties and identify potential highlights of this partnership. In addition to the port, we have a large port complex in our province, including an ore port. I invited the leaders of these two facilities because I believe it’s not only the Port of Xiamen that has potential. This team is very interested in understanding how Pecém works and discussing maritime routes and professional development,” adds the Vice Governor of the Popular Provincial Government of Fujian, Lin Wenbin.
