In April, the Brazilian port of Pecém exported a total of f 4,824,178 tonnes of steel coils to the city of Karadeniz Ereğli in Turkey. This operation is new to the port, explained Carlos Alberto Nunes, commercial manager at Tecer Terminais, an operational service provider in the Port of Pecém.
“The export of steel coils had only been done once in Pecém, so, naturally, being able to conduct this type of operation was very important to us. It indicates our potential and the wide range of cargo we are able to handle in the form of imports and exports to other nations,” he commented.
Economist Wandemberg Almeida, a member of the Ceará state regional economic council (Corecon-CE), reminisces that the state economy today is growing at a faster pace than the national economy thanks to operations like this.
“The presence of the steel mill CSP [Companhia Siderrgica do Pecém, a bi-national joint venture between the Brazilian Vale and the South Korean Dongkuk] in the Pecém industrial zone is critical in attracting attention in this market. More business, infrastructure improvements, and the sprouting of other niches are expected, a sign of f the state’s ability to maintain good relations with countries, the strength of the Ceará economy, and its favorable standing compared to recent years.”
