The Government of Pernambuco kicked off a strategic project in Suape Port’s history: the dredging of its internal channel. The service order authorizing the mobilization of dredgers was signed last Friday (27). With a total investment of R$199.7 million, the intervention is financed with R$100 million from the Economic Acceleration Program (PAC3) of the Ministry of Ports and Airports and R$99.7 million in state resources.

Project objective and impact on competitiveness The dredging will enable the port, the sixth busiest among public ports in Brazil, to accommodate container ships up to 366 meters long and other world-class vessels with maximum cargo capacity, increasing operational safety. Upon completion, expected in six months, the internal channel will be deepened to 16.2 meters, and 3.8 million cubic meters of sediment will be removed.

The contract also includes dredging and maintaining the evolution basin and the Liquid Bulk Piers (PGLs) 3A and 3B, increasing their drafts to 18.5 meters. Suape will reach a new operational level, consolidating the most significant draft for container ships among Brazilian public ports and the second largest for liquid bulk.

“More competitiveness for Suape” Pernambuco’s Secretary of Economic Development, Guilherme Cavalcanti, emphasized the importance of the project for boosting the local economy:

“This project is crucial to increase the competitiveness of Suape Port. The port can safely accommodate large ships by expanding the operational draft, generating more business and jobs. In addition to dredging the internal channel, we have already completed dredging the external channel and are finalizing the recovery of the pier at the Port. This is the commitment of Governor Raquel Lyra’s administration: investing in port infrastructure to make our ports more competitive.”

Sustainability and international standards: The removed sediments will be transported to a disposal area licensed by the State Environmental Agency (CPRH). The project follows strict international safety and environmental regulations, strengthening Suape’s strategic position on the global stage.

Infrastructure and future opportunities: With its privileged location and state-of-the-art infrastructure, Suape is positioning itself as a reference logistics hub, ready to attract new maritime routes and accommodate the largest categories of ships in operation. The winning bidder, the Van Oord/Jan De Nul consortium, is responsible for executing the project.

After the interventions, Suape will be able to compete globally, enhancing the Pernambuco economy and expanding the state’s business opportunities.
