Two months after operations began at the Chancay Megaport, at least 30 new logistics companies have been established in Huaral, generating 500 jobs and driving a 20% increase in business activity, according to Raúl Bernal, professor of the new International Logistics and Operations Management program at Universidad Católica Sedes Sapientiae (UCSS).

“The launch of Chancay Port has spurred a surge in new businesses linked to logistics and foreign trade in nearby areas. Huaral has seen the development of distribution centers, warehouses, and transportation companies, leading to business activity growth of around 20% to 25% in the region,” Bernal stated.

Economic Ripple Effects and Investment Growth

Bernal noted that Chancay Port is already delivering tangible economic benefits to the local economy. Investments in infrastructure construction have risen by 20% in Barranca and Huacho, including warehouse development and road improvements.

“Exports from Huaral, Huacho, and Barranca have increased by an estimated 15%, primarily benefiting agricultural products such as fruits, seafood, and manufactured goods,” he added.

Challenges in Unlocking Full Potential

While the port’s operations have already brought noticeable benefits, Bernal emphasized that several challenges must be addressed to fully capitalize on its growth potential.

“One of the main priorities is improving logistics management to enhance the competitiveness of small commercial enterprises. Huaura, Barranca, and Huaral are key agro-industrial zones, but port terminals still face infrastructure and storage capacity limitations, outdated equipment, bureaucratic customs procedures, and other logistical hurdles,” he explained.

Another challenge is the shortage of skilled labor, which affects decision-making and overall efficiency. Projections indicate that 10,000 new jobs will be created as the megaport continues its expansion.
