Peru to outdo Chile in grape exports during MY 2022/23
Jan, 05, 2023 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202301
The growth of shipments from Peru threatens Chile’s position as the biggest exporter of grapes. Unlike Chile, which has seen year-on-year declines in production, Peru has not registered a decrease in production since the 2001/02 harvest.
According to the USDA, the production of grapes for the 2022/23 Chilean harvest is projected at 737 thousand tonnes, while it should reach 766 thousand tonnes in Peru. In terms of exports, Chile should ship 555 thousand tonnes, representing 75.31% of total production. In Peru, the share of exports should amount to 76.37% of the output, equivalent to 585 thousand tonnes.
If the estimate is correct, Peru will be at the top of the list of the world’s largest exporters for the first time. However, it is important to remember that both countries rely heavily on exports, and their shipments work in a complementary way: while Peruvians export from November to February, Chileans export from February to May. Another important factor is that both countries’ primary buyer is the United States; however, Chilean shipments to North America are decreasing with each passing year.
