Pesticide imports up 95% at Paranagua Container Terminal

TCP, the company that manages the Paranaguá Container Terminal, recorded a 95% increase in the movement of pesticides between January and August 2022, compared to the same period in 2021. The terminal received more than 166 thousand tonnes of the product. However, challenges in foreign trade, government benefits, and market strategies of importers impacted growth.
Among the companies that most imported pesticides via TCP is CHD’S do Brasil, which, in the first months of 2022m increased the purchases by 700% compared to in 2021. According to the managing partner of CHD’S, Leila Zorzetto, “the main reason for the increase in imports was our growth in the market and the expansion of our portfolio with the approval of new registrations.”
The new batch of approvals by the federal government authorizing the importation of new pesticides contributed to the increase in the sector’s movement. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, in 2021 alone, 562 new types of pesticides were authorized to enter the market. Another reason for the surge in imports is the dry climate, which makes the environment conducive to the proliferation of pests and insects.
Imports via Paranagua
TCP’s leading pesticide-importing customers brought a total of 11,382 TEUs in 2022. The number is almost twice as big as the one seen in 2021, with a throughput of 5,851 TEUs from January to August. According to Giovanni Guidolim, TCP’s commercial and customer service manager, the pandemic has reduced the supply of raw materials on the market.
According to data from Sindiveg, the pesticide market in Paraná accounted for 10% of the purchases in the first half of 2022. The state invested more than USD 630 million in the period, an amount 12% higher compared to the same period of the previous year — something motivated as much by the incidence of insects and weeds as by the increase in planted area and by anticipation of purchases and seasonality.
“Although Paraná purchases increased by 12% in value, TCP saw a 95% increase in volume throughput of pesticides. This is because companies from various states have chosen Paranaguá as their entry gate due to our infrastructure capable of storing IMO cargo, in addition to the fact that we have the largest container yard and the best commercial advantages in Brazil. Furthermore, our 10-day free storage franchise gives businesses more flexibility in alignment with market trends that require more storage,” Guidolim says.
According to Sindiveg, the trend in Brazil is for companies to intensify the import requests for raw materials. “Because of the worsening of health challenges caused by pests and diseases, not only Paraná but all Brazilian states will maintain intense product acquisition for the 2022/2023 harvest,” Eliane Kay predicts.
