Brazilian truck drivers’ associations are in talks with the government to try to agree on minimum freight rates and the price of diesel. This week Petrobras has approved a new policy in which diesel prices at its refineries will not be readjusted more than once every 15 days. However, according to Estadão, the president of associations Abrava and Brascoop (Wallace Costa Landim) believes this step is not enough to prevent lorry drivers from calling a strike. Drivers are demanding the price freeze be extended to 30 days.
According to Estadão, truckers from Minas Gerais are the foremost advocates of a strike commencing on March 30. Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, and Rio Grande do Norte have decided not to participate.
The Federation of Independent Truckers of the State of São Paulo (Fecamsp) stated, “We, as Fecamsp entity, do not understand that the standstill of the category is a viable attitude. We do not support a strike, we want negotiation because we understand that there is a possibility that we will get it right, but the stoppage is not ruled out.”
The Luiz de Queiroz High School of Agriculture (ESALQ) and the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) are jointly reviewing minimum freight rates. The organs want to introduce a new methodology, enabling the truckers to monitor and update data for the implementation of national policy on minimum freight rates.
