The United States’ largest beef importing port, the Port of Philadelphia, has received some of the first beef (several tons) shipped from Argentina today following the end of a 17-year US imposed ban, due to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in 2001. Trading resumed following negotiations between the National Service of Health and Agri-Food Quality (Senasa) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
According to Global Meat News, Argentina is planning to export 20,000 tons of beef to the US per year, equivalent to US$150m-US$180m in export revenue. The Argentinian government estimates that 80% of its products will be used for lean meat and the rest for high-quality cuts.
