Philippines takes first place in Brazilian pork exports in 2024

Brazilian pork exports (including fresh and processed products) reached 130.9 thousand tonnes in October, according to the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA). This figure marks the sector’s second-highest monthly figure, representing a 40.7% increase over the 93 thousand tonnes exported in October of the previous year.

Revenue also reached new heights, setting an all-time monthly record of $313.3 million in October—a 56.4% increase over the $200.3 million recorded during the same month in 2023.

From January to October, pork exports rose by 10.7%, reaching 1.121 million tonnes compared to 1.013 million tonnes in the same period last year. Export revenues for 2024 have also been robust, up 5.2% year-to-date, totaling $2.482 billion, compared to $2.361 billion during the same period in 2023.

For the first time, the Philippines became the top destination for Brazilian pork exports, with 206 thousand tonnes shipped from January to October, a substantial 103.3% increase over the previous year. China followed, importing 199.9 thousand tonnes (-40.6%), with Chile at 92.5 thousand tonnes (+33.9%), Hong Kong at 89.4 thousand tonnes (-11.8%), and Japan at 75.8 thousand tonnes (+137.2%).

“After years as the primary destination for Brazilian pork, China has been surpassed by the Philippines, signaling a period of broader export diversification for the sector,” commented Ricardo Santin, President of ABPA. “In October, eight of our top ten importers recorded substantial increases, marking a new, more sustainable era for Brazilian pork exports.”

Santa Catarina remains Brazil’s leading pork exporter, with 68.6 thousand tonnes shipped in October—a 45.7% increase from the same period last year. It is followed by Rio Grande do Sul with 27.6 thousand tonnes (+25.6%), Paraná with 20.6 thousand tonnes (+44.5%), Mato Grosso with 3 thousand tonnes (-19.2%), and Mato Grosso do Sul with 2.9 thousand tonnes (+54.6%).
