Port Authority Portos RS disclosed data on the throughput registered across the Rio Grande do Sul state ports from January to November. The numbers account for the cargo moved in the ports of Rio Grande, Pelotas, and Porto Alegre, as well as companies located in the industrial district of Rio Grande.
Different cargoes are still feeling the impacts of the drought that hit producers in recent years, especially in 2022. In the first 11 months of the year, the throughput recorded was 35,838,523 tonnes, which was 18.19% lower than in the same period last year and 3.51% lower than in 2020.
The Port of Rio Grande saw 33,981,529 tonnes out of the total, being 10,002,230 tonnes of general cargo, 19,966,614 tonnes of solid bulk, and another 4,012,685 tonnes of liquid bulk. The cargo that grew the most was wheat, which grew 233.40% compared to last year.
The list of increases is then followed by wood chips, which increased by 14.86%, and cellulose pulp, which expanded by 11.13%. However, soybean movement fell again, from 12,860,109 tonnes in 2021 to 5,342,421 tonnes in 2022, a 58.46% decrease.
China remains the top export destination (31.68%), followed by Spain (4.98%), the United States (4.68%), Portugal (4.22%), Morocco (4.10%), and Iran (3.81%). Argentina accounts for 12.81 percent of total imports, followed by China (10.54 percent), Saudi Arabia (7.84 percent), Canada (6.95 percent), the United States (6.42%), and Morocco (5.42%).
The Port of Pelotas recorded a throughput of 1,117,827 tonnes, an increase of 19.47% compared to 2020, when the port moved 935,658 tonnes. So far, 946,029 tonnes of wood, 159,619 tonnes of clinker, and 12,179 tonnes of soybeans have been moved through the port.
The Port of Porto Alegre saw 739,167 tonnes, a drop of 27.53% compared to the same period last year. However, the port also recorded 477,933 tonnes of fertilizers, 100,161 tonnes of barley, 93,085 tonnes of general cargo, 47,503 tonnes of salt, and another 20,485 tonnes of wheat.
Regarding the number of containers, 476,204 units were handled from January to November, 294,710 of them full and another 181,494 empty.
