Port Guard participates in operation to unload uranium in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro’s Commission on Public Security of the State’s Ports and Terminals (CESPORTOS – RJ)  carried out a series of integrated actions to prevent possible incidents during the unloading of a uranium cargo that arrived at the Port of Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday, February 2.

The Port Guard of Companhia Docas do Rio de Janeiro (CDRJ) participated in unloading the vessel BBC Aquamarine. The operation also required the participation of the Captaincy of Rio de Janeiro (CPRJ), the Federal Police, the Military Police, and the ICTSI company – Rio, lessee of the container terminal where the vessel docked.

The transport of the nuclear cargo was monitored by the Republic’s Institutional Security Office (GSI/PR) from the ship’s origin in the Port of Rotterdam to the Port of Rio de Janeiro. CESPORTOS – RJ coordinated and monitored directly from the Port Security Command and Control Center (CCCSP) of the Port of Rio de Janeiro, the various institutions involved in the operation.

The security unit, operated by the Port Guard, monitors camera images throughout the port, including the maritime port polygonal area, which allowed the ship’s arrival to be monitored all the way from the entrance through the access channel, at the Guanabara Bay entrance.

According to the superintendent of the Port Guard, José Tadeu Diniz, the Protection Level – MARSEC (Maritime Security) was raised to Level 2, under the terms of the ISPS-Code (International Code for the Protection of Ships and Port Facilities) and Resolution No. 53/2020-CONPORTOS.

“In addition to monitoring the operation and the perimeter, other additional security measures were implemented, such as the increase in the number of guards stationed at the private terminal, the installation of more side barriers, increased access control to the terminal, including the restriction of unauthorized vessels, and the establishment of a communication channel between the CCCSP and the institutions involved,” he explained.

Following the successful unloading, Superintendent Diniz informed that the Group of Extraordinary Actions of the Port Guard (GAEX/SUPGUA) safely escorted the transport convoy carrying the two radioactive material containers to access gate 24 in Caju. The convoy was then escorted by the Federal and Military polices to its final destination, the Nuclear Fuel Factory of the Nuclear Industries of Brazil (INB) in Resende/RJ.
