Port handling grows in Santa Catarina, setting new record

With more than 31.9 million tons handled in the first half, Santa Catarina achieved the best result in history – 34.5% more than last year, when it broke the record so far. The growth is more than three times higher than the national growth of 9.4%. The numbers are from ANTAQ (the national waterway transport agency), released this Wednesday, August 11.
Santa Catarina’s growth occurred across all types of cargo. The biggest increase came from liquid and gaseous bulk which grew 92.9%, reaching almost 8.4 million tons. But container cargo continues to dominate the movement in Santa Catarina ports, with about 16.8 million tons handled in the first semester – a growth of 22.9% compared to 2020. There was an improvement in navigation results, both in long-haul transport (an increase of 24.6%, reaching 21.2 million tons) and in cabotage (an increase of 58%, reaching 10.5 million tons).
With these results, Santa Catarina started to represent 5.4% of the national port movement in the semester, the first time the port achieved more than 5%.
The data are part of the Waterway Statistics, presented every month by ANTAQ, and take into account the public and private ports.
