The Port of Imbituba has announced the implementation of an environmental compensation plan for three ongoing projects to ensure sustainable and environmentally responsible operations. The projects include the expansion of Berth 2, the construction and reinforcement of Berth 3, and the rock removal at Berth 1, all of which will optimize docking operations. More than half a million reais have been allocated for the initiative by regulations set by the environmental licensing authority. The funds will be applied based on State Law No. 14,675/2009 (State Environmental Code), Federal Law No. 9,985/2000 (National System of Conservation Units – SNUC), its regulatory Decree No. 4,340/2002, and CONAMA Resolution No. 371/2006.

“The Port of Imbituba is committed to pursuing sustainable development in its activities, which includes taking responsibility for environmental issues. This initiative demonstrates our commitment to the surrounding community,” stated Beto Martins, Secretary of Ports, Airports, and Railways (SPAF).

According to Christiano Lopes de Oliveira, CEO of the Port Complex, the Port of Imbituba is dedicated to growth, modernization, and environmental preservation, a key pillar of its management strategy.

“The financial contribution to the Environmental Compensation Plan for expansion projects reflects our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. We adhere to best practices and current environmental legislation to ensure that all port operations are carried out responsibly, minimizing impacts and contributing to the restoration of degraded areas and the preservation of natural resources,” emphasized Oliveira.

The Commitment Agreement between the Port Authority and the Santa Catarina Environmental Institute (IMA) reinforces this dedication to sustainability. Paulo Márcio de Souza, Health, Safety, and Environmental Manager at the Port of Imbituba, explained:

“We are implementing rigorous measures to offset any potential environmental impacts. As agreed with the licensing authority, these funds will be directed toward land regularization, environmental programs of the IMA, conservation of state parks, and management, monitoring, and protection of the conservation unit, including its buffer zone—the Southern Right Whale Environmental Protection Area (APA da Baleia-Franca). All actions will be carried out in compliance with environmental regulations and competent authorities to ensure responsible port development aligned with best environmental practices.”

Environmental compensation is a legal requirement in Brazil, established under laws such as the National Environmental Policy (Law No. 6,938/1981) and the Environmental Crimes Law (Law No. 9,605/1998). By adhering to these obligations, the Port Authority reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development, ensuring that operational expansion goes hand in hand with preserving natural resources and local biodiversity.
